How Deep Should Mulch Be?
Spread 2–3 inches of mulch in most landscape beds. When refreshing existing mulch, about 1 inch is usually enough. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems.
Depth by mulch type
| Mulch | Recommended depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shredded hardwood | 2–3 in | Knits together, stays put on slopes |
| Pine bark nuggets | 3–4 in | Coarse; can float in heavy rain |
| Pine straw | 3–4 in (settles to 2) | Light, good on slopes |
| Wood chips (arborist) | 3–4 in | Great around trees and paths |
| Compost as mulch | 1–2 in | Feeds soil; breaks down quickly |
Why not deeper?
Too much mulch keeps soil soggy, starves roots of oxygen and gives rodents cover. Mulch piled against trunks — so-called volcano mulching — holds moisture against the bark and invites rot and insects. Pull it back so the root flare is visible.
