Drywall Sheet Sizes and Thickness
Standard drywall sheets are 4 ft wide and 8, 10 or 12 ft long. 1/2-inch board is standard for interior walls; 5/8-inch Type X fire-rated board is used where codes require fire resistance, such as walls and ceilings between a garage and living space.
Sheet sizes

| Moisture-resistant | 1/2 in | Bathrooms (not direct water contact) |
| Cement board | 1/2 in | Behind tile in showers |
Fewer seams, less finishing
Every joint needs tape and several coats of compound. Bigger sheets mean fewer joints but are heavy — a 4×12 sheet of 1/2-inch board weighs roughly 70–80 lb. Rent a drywall lift for ceilings.
